What little crows!is YogArt ?
YogArt t is an opportunity for children to explore and develop the various intelligences we all posses by "playing yoga" and making art. Themes give form to the week and provide continuity between the yoga and art portions of the program. This year's themes will include nature, movement, and symmetry/balance.

Yoga is non-competitive physical expression, taught in creative ways to children. Children don't usually "do" yoga, as adults would. But through yoga they can imitate and learn about nature and their environment (many poses in yoga are named after animals, such as the classic Downward Dog, Eagle, Crow; others are rechristened into child-friendly terms, like Mermaid; others poses are made up just for kids, such as Duck and Owl). Stories, affirmations and visualizations also help children to explore the world and their role in it.

An underlying acknowledgement of Professor Howard Gardiner, Harvard University, work on the multiple intelligences runs through the program. Gardiner identified verbal/linguistic, logical/mathmatical, visual/spatial, musical/rhythmic, body/kinesthetic, interpersonal (social skills), and intrapersonal (introspection) as separate intelligences. Lately, an 8th, naturalist (knowledge of body, interest in pets, understanding of envoronmental issues) has been added to the list. While the linguistic and mathmatical skills are emphasized at school, yoga and art provide conduits for children to develop other aspects of themselves, and make playful use of the linguistic and mathematical skills. For example, linguistics fun includes rhyme and alliteration, and mathematical concepts include grouping poses (backbends, upside down's, animals) and noticing the body's geometry and the shapes we can make.

Awareness of breathing is a key feature of yoga, and at YogArt breathing exercises give children tools to help them with everything from boosting energy, enhancing concentration, and coping usefully with emotions. The breath is often used as part of our play - imitiations of animals or other natural phenomena (like exploding volcanoes), and expressions of feelings.

Art is hugely popular with children because it is an open form of expression. At YogArt we use art to express internal impulses, while teaching the children basic techniques. This year's art program will include a variety of mediums, including drawing and craftwork. The aim is to develop creative expression  through drawing, printing and papermaking collage. We will explore colour, texture and picturemaking through thematic projects inspired by nature, animals and the figure.

Our break time is used productively. It is snack time, and we encourage parents to provide a healthy snack. We also provide a loosely structured activity, so that children who wish to simply "chill out" can, and those interested in an activity may pursue it. Last summer we built a Celtic Wheel outside, a representation of the cycles of nature and life. A rainy day might see us coloring mandalas or making masks.

Hilary designs her art course to enhance individual expression and enjoy color, texture and shape through drawing, painting and collage. The half hour break between the two segments will be for eating our packed snack and engaging in creative activities such as mandala making or reading.
